Hmmmmm, now considering that we're run by such a financial genius as Doug Ellis you might not understand why the share price has collapsed from £11 at issue to £1.75 (as of 01/06/2001).
I don't. And I've had it explained to me by Mark Ansell personally. I do remember him saying, following one massive "dip" in the price that no shares actually changed hands to cause this, it was just the financial institutions "re-valuing" the price. I forgot to ask him why they were always revaluing the price in a downwards direction.
Anyway.....
There are 11,449,000 shares in issue.
At a mid closing price of 175.0p, the Company is valued at £23m. according to Reuters. When the share price moves, it is the shareholders who gain or lose, not the Company. Of course, as a major shareholder, Doug Ellis also loses, but since he doesn't dig into his own pocket to fund the club, that's no problem!
(Note: This is a rather simplified answer. In actual fact, movements in the share price can affect future financial decisions, but it would take too long to explain how, why and in what circumstances.)
The AGM is normally held in the third week of August. Yes, it is true (or at least has been reported - which is not always the same thing!) that the AGM may be held during the day, rather than in the evening.
The Board have control over roughly 35% of the outstanding share capital. There is no record of shares owned by supporters (first define - in financial terms - a "supporter"!), but I would reckon 10-15% at the very most. That would leave the City (I assume you do mean the City, not the City of Birmingham!) with roughly 50%. If anybody has the real figures, I'd be interested to see them.
From the last Company Report ...
As at 30 June 1998, the company, under the provisions of the Companies Act 1985 (as amended), has received no notice of interests of more than 3 per cent in the Ordinary Share Capital of the company, other than H.D. Ellis (Chairman) who holds 33.6 per cent.
It also shows the following Share ownership:
H.D. Ellis 3,847,814
S.M. Stride 1,000
M.J. Ansell 1,387
D.M. Owen 1,200
A.J. Hales 5,000
Stride and Ansell also have considerable Share Options but at 7UKP and 11UKP so they are unlikely to take them up in the short term.
Anyway, these People know more than I do, The Villa Shares Trust
